The 14th annual Barr Trail Mountain Race is Sunday, July 19, 2015. The 12.6-mile course begins in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and ascends Pikes Peak’s iconic Barr Trail to Barr Camp before turning, descending and finishing back in town.

Although the course doesn’t include the Manitou Incline, the area will be more congested and runners will be on Barr Trail. The race starts at 7 AM and most runners should be back down by 10:30 AM. It is best that you avoid being on Barr Trail between those times. If for some reason you feel it’s necessary to do the Incline and head back down Barr Trail during those times, please be courteous and give the runners right of way whether they’re going up or going down.

Thanksgiving 2013 Conditions

Manitou Incline January 22, 2012
Not a Current Photo but Common Winter Conditions

Thinking of burning of some calories on the Incline before stuffing yourself for Thanksgiving? You aren’t the only one and people have been asking about the current condition on the Incline.

I haven’t made it up the Incline in the last couple of days but have heard some reports of the trail conditions. Conditions sound typical for this time of year after it snows and we get a couple warm days.

The bottom of the Incline melts off and is mostly bare. The center and top have packed snow and ice. As often happens, it is slicker now that some of the snow has turned to ice. I heard of an experienced Incline user falling on the ice this morning even with screws in his shoes.

Conditions on Barr Trail are likely similar to what’s on the Incline. Some sections may be melted off but others will be packed snow or ice.

It’s definitely not safe to be doing the Incline in these conditions without traction devices. If you don’t have any, check out Yaktrax, Kahtoola Microspikes or Stabilicers Lite.

The Pikes Peak Ascent was this morning which made it difficult to get to the Manitou Incline until after 8:30 AM. Access tomorrow, Sunday August 18th, 2013, will be tough until late afternoon.

The Pikes Peak Marathon starts at 7 AM on Manitou Avenue and goes up Ruxton and on to Barr Trail. The leaders will be coming back down Barr Trail and Ruxton mid-morning. Slower runners will still be coming down well in to the afternoon.

There will be no parking on Ruxton throughout the day. Runners will be coming down Barr Trail so it’s best to stay off it. If you feel the need to hike the Incline tomorrow, please wait until late afternoon or evening to avoid disrupting the Pikes Peak Marathon.
